Sciatica Stretches

Tip #3 Neurodynamic Stretch

NOTE: Please Read The Disclaimer at the bottom of this page BEFORE performing any stretches!

Your #3 sciatica stretch is the Neurodynamic stretch. This stretch will work on your hamstring, calf muscle and your sciatic nerve. It is important to have mobility of your sciatic nerve and this stretch will help do that.

To do this stretch you must have a belt or towel to wrap around your foot.

Start position: Find a nice firm flat surface and lay down on your back. In the picture above Dr. Amy is using a mat table, but if you don’t have one of these you can either use your floor or your bed as your flat surface.

How to do the Neurodynamic Stretch:

    • Lie on your back.
    • Keep your left leg bent with your foot flat on the mat.
    • Place the belt or towel around your right foot.
    • Raise your right leg up while holding the belt around your foot.
    • Keep your right leg straight.
    • When your leg is all the way up begin to pump your ankle back and forth so that your toes point towards you and then to the ceiling. (You should feel your greatest stretch when the toes are pointing towards you)
    • Repeat the above motion 20 times in sets of 3.
    • Switch legs.

You should feel a nice stretch along the hamstrings and calf allowing you to increase your mobility of the sciatic nerve.
