Our sciatica exercise for this week is the Lunge! Lunges are very simple to do, and they are great because they strengthen your quads and hamstrings while also helping with your balance. This is important because the stronger these muscles are, the less likely you are to use your back when you lift objects, thus helping to prevent and relieve sciatica and back pain!
Much of the back pain that people suffer with is caused by them not lifting objects in the correct way. We've previously said one of the main ways this happens is that people do not wait after being in a relaxed position before lifting anything. Another of the most common ways that people hurt their back while lifting is that they are not doing it correctly, and that is why this week's Back Pain Relief Tip is about knowing how to Lift the Right Way!
Shirley was an active person, both in the classroom as a teacher, and outdoors with her family. But all of that ended after she started having back pain. Unfortunately, none of the traditional treatments that she tried to relieve her pain worked. Eventually the pain got so bad that she had to retire from teaching, and whenever she would go places with her family she felt like she was in the way. She hated that feeling, and knew she needed to do something. So she came to the Illinois Back Institute.
To understand how to treat sciatica you need to understand what is causing sciatica. 90% of Sciatica is a pinching of a nerve in the spine. The nerves get pinched in between the vertebrae in the area known as the foramen. A brief summary of the spine is necessary to understand how to treat it.
