You already know that relaxation is good for your back, but are you relaxing the correct way? While relaxing you need to be careful that you are not putting your body, specifically your spine, back into the same position that you had been in all day. If you work in the typical office setting, coming home and sitting on the couch can have the same effect on your back. You could be holding your back in a fixed position and depriving your spine of its flexibility. This can cause your back to become even more stiff and sore. How can you avoid this? Make sure to change up your position. When relaxing try find a way to read the newspaper or watch television without sitting in your easy chair. An example of what you can do is trying lying down on your stomach, resting either on a small pillow to elevate your upper body off of the floor. This position feels great and introduces the normal inward curve back into your low back. If your job has you standing on your feet all day, then you’re better off sitting. This is probably the best activity for your back, but be sure that you are sitting in the proper position.
Summer is here and is a great time for different sporting events. The problem is that stadium seats and bleachers are not very comfortable or supportive for your back. If possible, bring your own seating to the game or a seat cushion if you have to sit in bleachers or stadium seats. If you can bring any type of portable product that provides support to your lower back while sitting will help.
