This week's Sciatica Stretch is the Piriformis Stretch! The piriformis is located in the buttocks region. The piriformis muscle runs close to the sciatic nerve so it can irritate the nerve and cause sciatic pain. When the piriformis muscle becomes tight and/or inflamed it can irritate the sciatic nerve. This can lead to a tingling and numbness that runs from the lower back all the way down the leg and even into your foot. It is very important to stretch the piriformis muscle if you are suffering from sciatica.
Getting out of bed is something that almost everyone does on a daily basis. It seems simple enough for most people, but anyone who is suffering with back problems know that even the tasks that seem the easiest can be some of the most challenging. For people with back, neck, or sciatica pain, just getting out of bed can not only be difficult, but extremely painful. The Back Pain Relief Tip for this week is about the proper way to get out of bed so that you do not put extra pressure on the spine and cause more pain. We call this technique the Logroll!
There are some jobs that you have to be in top condition for at all times, and that includes having a healthy back. Peter Cruz's job as a police officer is one of those. But one day Peter slipped on a patch of ice, and ever since then he suffered from chronic back pain. He found that the pain not only affected his ability to do his job, but it also changed his life at home. It was hard for him to say no to his kids when they asked to play. His wife feared that his back would buckle on him while at work, which would be the worst time. He knew he needed to get help, so he came to the Illinois Back Institute.
