Our sciatica stretch for this week is the Hip Flexor Stretch! Prolonged sitting increases the tightness in the hip flexor muscles, and if those muscles are tight it will alter body mechanics and posture which can affect your sciatica pain. Therefore, increased flexibility of the muscle is extremely important in order to decrease the severity of sciatica and lower back pain symptoms.
For people who have to sit all of the time and are suffering from back pain because of it, one of the best ways to combat it is to stand up and walk around for a few minutes if you have been sitting too long. But obviously this may not be possible for everyone, since many people have jobs where they cannot leave their desks, or are doing something else where getting up and moving around is not feasible. So instead, do a micro break! It is a very simple stretch that can be done in any chair you are sitting in.
Nick fell while in his garage a couple months ago. He didn't think anything of it at the time, but later that night he was in tremendous pain. It got so bad that Nick had to go to the ER. He couldn't sleep or stand because of the pain, and had to use a walker to get around. All his doctors could do for him was give him narcotics to put him in "never never land" but he didn't want to go there. Later he learned that he had a bulging disc, and it was recommended that he have surgery for it. Nick didn't want to do that, so he decided to come to the Illinois Back Institute instead.
Back pain can happen suddenly, and at any time. This pain can happen for any number of reasons, like from an injury, herniated or bulging disc, a strain, or poor posture. One of the most common places that sudden back pain occurs is in the lower back on the right side, and usually happens when you are bending over. It may be something as simple as a minor strain, but the pain definitely isn't minor!
