This week's Sciatica Stretch is the Double Knees To Chest Stretch! The sciatic nerve runs from the back of your pelvis all the way down both legs and ending at your feet. The Double Knees to Chest exercise is designed to help relieve your sciatic pain and improve your flexibility in the lower back.
For people who have to sit all of the time and are suffering from back pain because of it, one of the best ways to combat it is to stand up and walk around for a few minutes if you have been sitting too long. But obviously this may not be possible for everyone, since many people have jobs where they cannot leave their desks, or are doing something else where getting up and moving around is not feasible. So instead, do a micro break! It is a very simple stretch that can be done in any chair you are sitting in.
Being a Hall of Fame football player puts a toll on your body and your back, and Dan Hampton knows about this all too well. Due to the beating his body took during his playing years, he was suffering from a bulging disc, herniated disc, and sciatica. The pain got so bad for him that he was having trouble tying his own shoes. He came to the Illinois Back Institute for help, with his goal being able to get back to doing the little things, like hitting a golf ball.
In Part One we discussed just what a Herniated Disc is exactly. For a quick refresher: a Herniated Disc occurs when the outside of the disc ruptures, and the jelly-like substance inside the disc, called the nucleus, leaks out. We also reviewed some basic anatomy involving the spine so that you could better know just how a disc works as a shock absorber for the vertebrae. Now that you know what a Herniated Disc actually is, it is time to learn what causes them!
