Almost everyone has to stand in front of a sink at least once a day, and most do twice or more. The most common reasons for this are to brush your teeth over the bathroom sink, or to wash dishes in the kitchen sink. Because of this, it is no surprise that two of the complaints we hear most often from people suffering with back pain are: "My back always hurts when I brush my teeth!" and "I can't wash dishes for more than 10 minutes before my back pain becomes excruciating!"

People often lean forward while brushing their teeth or washing dishes, while also sometimes reaching out in front of themselves. Constantly doing this motion can put an excess load on the the discs in the spine, and can often lead to back problems. The important thing when performing these activities is the way that you stand while doing them, which is why it is our Back Pain Relief Tip of the week!
- The main thing to remember when brushing your teeth or washing dishes is to stay standing up straight as much as you can. To accomplish this, place a 6 inch stepstool in front of you while standing at the sink, and place one foot on it. This will keep you in an upright position while you brush or wash.
- When you do need to bend over, bend at the hips using the hip hinge method. Also, remember to straighten back up as soon as you can.
By following these steps you will prevent the overloading of your discs which can lead to back pain!

At The Illinois Back Institute we are dedicated to educating people, because we know that the more that you understand about your problem, the more likely you are to eliminate it. We specialize in Functional Disc Rehydration - a multi-disciplinary approach to making the back healthier without surgery, injectionsormedications. This works toward relieving the pressure off the disc by allowing the nutrients to flow back into it. In the meantime, the supportingmuscles are strengthened and reactivated to help re-stabilize the spine.
