Man Finally Finds Relief After 10 Years Of Back Pain And Sciatica Thanks To IBI

Posted by Illinois Back Institute on Thu, Aug 17, 2017 @ 05:00 PM

Back-Pain 470x246.pngA 64 year old male came to our clinic with back, leg and foot pain (sciatica). He had been experiencing pain for over 10 years. When it first started the pain was just in his back and he felt it was not a big deal, it was just one of those things you "deal with" and the pain would take care of itself. But as the years went on without proper treatment, the pain got worse and worse and started slowly moving down his legs until it reached into his feet. Now the pain was nearly unbearable and was affecting his day to day life.

He had recently been to see doctors and tried different methods of treatment, but they were not working. He knew the doctors would recommend surgery next, which was something he was definitely not interested in undergoing at his age if he did not have to. Then, while watching TV he learned about the Illinois Back Institute.

Before coming to see us, the patient had been to three different doctors and had tried several different means to try and help his back and leg pain. These included:

  1. Chiropractic treatment
  2. Pain medications
  3. Over-the-counter medications
  4. NSAIDs (anti-inflammatory pain relievers)

His main goal in coming to us was to find any way he could to relieve some of the pain in his back and leg so that he could avoid having to undergo surgery. When he first arrived at our clinic, he stated his pain was at a 7 (with 10 being the worst pain imaginable), and his Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) was at 44 (out of a 0 to 100 scale). The Oswestry Disability Index is an indicator used to determine a patient's level of disability, and someone with an ODI of 44 is considered severely disabled. People with pain levels that high and for that long are nearly always recommended for surgery by doctors.

We reviewed his history and MRI to make our diagnosis; he was undoubtedly suffering from sciatica, but it was vital to find out what was causing it. The main causes of Sciatica include:

  • Herniated Disc
  • Bulging Disc
  • Degenerative Disc
  • Spinal Stenosis

Our doctors confirmed that he had three of them: a Bulging Disc, a Degenerated Disc, and Spinal Stenosis, along with Radiculopathy. Now our doctors knew exactly what to treat. As stated earlier, at his first treatment his pain was at a 7 and his ODI was at 44. After 4 weeks of treatment his pain level had dropped, after 8 weeks his sciatica was gone. By the end of his treatments, his pain level was down to a 1, his ODI was zero, and his back problems were completely resolved!

This patient wanted to do whatever he could to avoid having to resort to surgery on his back. Not only did our treatment help prevent him from having to go under the knife, it got rid of his back pain and sciatica completely! If you are suffering with back problems and don't know what to do, give us a call. We can help you!
