This week's Sciatica Stretch is the Lower Abdomen Stretch, otherwise called the Sphinx! This stretch is going to help stretch your abdominals while also assisting in pushing a bulging disc back into place. This is a manual way to try and decrease your sciatica symptoms that are being caused by a disc bulging onto a nerve.
Whether it be sitting at work, or sitting in a car or train to get to work, or sitting at home to relax, people are sitting way more than they ever have before. For people who have to sit all of the time and are suffering from back pain because of it, one of the best ways to combat it is to stand up and walk around for a few minutes if you have been sitting too long. But obviously this may not be possible for everyone, since many people have jobs where they cannot leave their desks, or are doing something else where getting up and moving around is not feasible. So instead, do a micro break! It is a very simple stretch that can be done in any chair you are sitting in.
Shirley was an active person, both in the classroom as a teacher, and outdoors with her family. But all of that ended after she started having back pain. Unfortunately, none of the traditional treatments that she tried to relieve her pain worked. Eventually the pain got so bad that she had to retire from teaching, and whenever she would go places with her family she felt like she was in the way. She hated that feeling, and knew she needed to do something. So she came to the Illinois Back Institute.
The focus of today's tip on foods that can help improve the overall health of your back is cherries! Cherries are a great food for your back because they are full of antioxidants and other compounds that reduce inflammation. They're also great because they are a quick and easy food. You can buy cherries and eat them plain, or you can drink cherry juice if you prefer, or you can have some fun with them and add them into a healthy meal or a snack.
