Back-Pain 470x246.pngThis case study involves a 37 year old man who came to us for treatment. He had been suffering from terrible back pain and sciatica for over 2 years and nothing he had done was helping to relieve it. The pain had gotten so bad, he said that on a daily basis it was now at an 8 on a scale of 0 to 10, with a 10 being the worst pain imaginable. He really wanted to avoid surgery or other invasive procedures but was worried that that was the way his treatment was headed, until he heard about the Illinois Back Institute.

The patient said the pain started rather suddenly about 2 years ago in his lower back, and then rapidly progressed into including shooting pain down the leg to his knees. At the time he came to see us about his pain, he said it was constant and between a 7 and 8. He had been to 3 different doctors and gotten both a MRI and X-Ray scan, and they had tried several different methods including:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Over-the-counter medications and NSAIDs (anti-inflammatory pain relievers)
  • Prescription drugs
  • Pain medications

All of these treatments only worked temporarily, because they were only covering up the problem instead of treating it. And as a result, the pain always came back and kept getting worse. At this point his doctors were beginning to mention something more invasive such as spinal injections or fusion surgery, which he definitely did not want. So he scheduled a free consultation with us to see what we could do for his back pain and sciatica.

At the patient's first appointment we discussed his back problems, and went over his MRI and X-Ray to find out exactly what was causing his pain and sciatica so we knew what we were treating. Some of the most common causes of sciatica include:

  • Herniated Disc
  • Bulging Disc
  • Degenerated Disc
  • Spinal Stenosis

Our patient had each of the first three, plus a pinched nerve! We also tested him on the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), which is a measurement used by doctors to determine the level of a patient's disability. He scored a 44, which is considered a Severe Disability and means that pain is a big problem in the patient's life and is beginning to affect many parts of it.

After showing him how our treatment, Functional Disc Stabilization, could treat the cause of his back pain and sciatica, he decided to begin immediately. After 4 weeks, his pain level was down to a 4 and his ODI was down to 30. After 8 weeks, he no longer had pain down his legs and his pain level was down to 2. And by the time he was finished with his treatment, his sciatica was resolved completely, his pain level was at zero, and his ODI was at a 14 which is considered normal!

This patient was beginning to think that a major surgery was the only way he could get rid of his back pain. But we were able to treat his pain and eliminate it completely! If you are suffering with back pain and sciatica, we can help!

At the Illinois Back Institute we strive to educate people as much as possible about their back, neck, and sciatica pain, because it has been proven that the more people know about their pain the more likely they will be to get rid of it!
