Herniated_Disc10-1This is Part 10 in our series about Herniated Discs. If you missed Part 9, Click Here!

At the Illinois Back Institute, our clinical experience has always been that the more that you understand about your problem, the more likely you are to eliminate it. It is for this reason that we created this series all about Herniated Discs. We were seeing so many people every day that were suffering with them, but all that they really knew about them is that they can be extremely painful. They didn't know why or how they had a Herniated Disc, what they were, why the traditional treatments they had previously tried were not working, or why our treatment has been so successful in eliminating Herniated Discs and relieving their pain.

In Part 1 of this series, we discussed what a Herniated Disc is. We explained how in your spine there are 24 vertebrae, and between each of those vertebrae is a disc. These discs are basically like rubber cushions that absorb and lessen the impact on the vertebrae from normal day-to-day activities, and inside these discs is a substance called the nucleus that provides the cushioning effect of the disc. Sometimes, the outside of a disc deteriorates or becomes damaged and ruptures, and the nucleus leaks out. This is what is called a Herniation.

Part 2 in this series was about what the main causes of Herniated Discs are. The three most common causes of Herniated Discs are:

  • Aging
  • Excess or repetitive strain on the back
  • Trauma to the back

We also talked about the risk factors associated with Herniated Discs, which include age and gender, genetics, smoking, and weight.

Part 3 was about the most common symptoms of Herniated Discs. The most common symptom is pain on one side of the body, but many people also experience numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness. In this part we also discussed some of the ways and situations that may cause those symptoms to intensify. The situations that can cause flare-ups in these symptoms include:

  • At night
  • Getting up from a sitting position
  • From putting a sudden strain on your back, like from sneezing or coughing
  • Standing or walking for an extended amount of time
  • Bending backwards

In Part 4 we showed a video that recapped some of what we had previously talked about, along with showing some animations that can help to explain what we discussed and make it easier to understand.

Part 5 in this series discussed some of the most common treatments that doctors prescribe for Herniated Discs. These treatments included:

  • Herniated_Disc10_circleOver-the-counter pain relievers or anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Prescription drugs and narcotics
  • Physical Therapy
  • Chiropractic Therapy
  • Spinal Injections
  • Surgery

Each of these came with a brief explanation of what they are prescribed for, what their intended results are, and why they might not work. As we said, many of these treatments may work for a short amount of time, but after a while the pain will often come back and sometimes be even worse than before.

In Part 6 we covered some of the most common natural treatments for Herniated Discs and the best way to utilize these tips. Many people suffering with Herniated Discs may prefer a more natural treatment, without any drugs or invasive procedures. Some of these natural treatments included alternating between heat and cold packs, exercising, yoga, changing your diet, acupuncture, and massage therapy. Each of these natural treatments can help with pain, but for most people the relief is only temporary because the herniated disc is still there.

In Part 7 we discussed the science behind our treatment, Functional Disc Rehydration, and what it does that is so different and better than any of the treatments mentioned above. The main difference is that the previous treatments never aim to repair or heal the herniated disc; their goal is to either cover it up, bypass it, or do a temporary fix to relieve the pain. But the problem is still there and will almost always eventually come back. Our treatment is different because it specifically targets the herniated discs to heal them, by relieving the pressure from them and allowing oxygen and nutrients to re-enter and rehydrate them, while strengthening the muscles and stabilizing the spine with therapy.

We also discussed the study that we commissioned that amazingly showed that:

  • After just one Functional Disc Rehydration treatment, all patients experienced disc rehydration of at least 18 percent
  • Therapy over 10 weeks produced rehydration in the disc of 80 percent
  • All patients experienced complete elimination of herniated and bulging discs

Normal_and_Herniated_DiscsAnd in Parts 8 and 9 we showed proof through MRI's and Case Studies of how we are able to get healing in patient's herniated discs. The before and after images of our patients showed how some of the largest herniated discs we had ever seen were completely eliminated with our treatment. A couple of the case studies we discussed included:

  • Allen Gill

When Allen Gill first came to see us, he had already had a long history of back pain, and it was getting worse. He had tried everything from traditional physical therapy to epidural injections into his spine, but nothing had worked. He wanted to avoid surgery, but he also knew he couldn't continue to live with the pain he had. He heard about the Illinois Back Institute from a friend, and came to us looking for some relief. After 3 months of treatment, his herniated disc was completely healed!

  • Danielle Freeman - Case Study #201

Danielle is a physical education teacher and track and field coach who came to us for help with her constant back pain. Her pain actually started 15 years ago, and after she had children the pain started getting worse. Now it was to the point that it was preventing her from playing with her kids or affecting her ability to teach! She came to us after seeing one of our commercials. She began treatment immediately, and by the time she was finished her pain was gone, her flexibility had improved, and she was able to play with her kids and teach like she used to!

The Illinois Back Institute is dedicated to educating people, because we know that the more that you understand about your problem, the more likely you are to eliminate it.

The key to our treatment is solving the underlying cause. Our treatment has been shown over and over again to be able to repair Herniated Discs and return the disc to a healthy state.
