Chances are that most people have to use the sinks in their bathroom or kitchen at least once a day, and most likely several times a day. People use the bathroom sink to brush or floss their teeth once or more a day, to wash their hands, to shave (if needed), and for other reasons. Most also use the kitchen sink daily to wash dishes, clean produce and other food, prepare meals, and more. Often times the people who perform these tasks every day also complain of back pain. This is no coincidence, because when many people do these tasks they are doing them wrong!

When standing at the sink to do something like wash dishes or brush your teeth, the thing that many people are doing wrong is that they are bending over in a way that can hurt your back. People tend to lean forward and reach out with their arms in front of themselves when doing these tasks, which places extra unneeded stress on the discs in the spine. We've already discussed how many people use the sink several times a day, which means they are putting their spine in this position multiple times each day. By repeatedly making this mistake people are causing damage to the discs which is leading to back pain!
Fortunately, there is an easy tip to prevent this back pain from happening. The number one thing to remember is that when you are using the sink you need to stay standing as straight as possible. The best way to do this is to place a small stepstool in front of you and put one foot on it while you are using the sink. Doing this will help you stay upright and keep your back straight. Also, if you do need to bend over, remember to use the hip hinge method and bend at the hips while keeping your back as straight as possible. And always return to your position standing straight as soon as you can.
