This case study is about a 49 year old woman who came to us for help. She had been suffering with severe back pain and sciatica, and she told us that none of the treatments she had done to that point had made any effect on her pain. She was desperate to try anything and everything before she had to resort to injections or even surgery, so she decided to come to the Illinois Back Institute.

The patient's pain first started just over a year ago and rapidly started getting worse. She said the worst part was the sciatica pain in her leg, which started at her back and radiated all the way down into her foot. It hurt so much that it made simple things like walking or standing difficult, and also made it hard to even get much sleep. She had been to see her doctor and had tried several ways to treat the pain, including:
- Traditional physical therapy
- Regular pain pills and NSAIDs (anti-inflammatory pain relievers)
- Prescription and over-the-counter medications
- Narcotics (powerful pain pills)
When the patient came to our clinic for her Free Consultation, she was a little bit skeptical.
At 5'2, 224 pounds, with a Body Mass Index of 41.1, she knew she was overweight, and she wasn't sure if our treatment would even be effective with her.
But we assured her that our treatment, Functional Disc Rehydration, worked on people of all shapes and sizes, and we have successfully treated many people who were the same weight or heavier than she was.
On the day of her first treatment we did an evaluation and reviewed her history. We asked her what she felt like her pain level was at on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the worst pain imaginable, and she said it was a 7. Then we tested her on the Oswestry Disability Index. The ODI is a scale that doctors use to measure the level of disability in a patient. She got a score of 62 on a scale of 1 to 100. People with a score of 62 are considered to have a Crippling Disability, where the pain is affecting every part of the person's life and a doctor's intervention is required in order to improve their condition.
We then looked at her MRI to determine what exactly was causing all of her back pain and sciatica. After evaluation it was determined that she was suffering from the following:
- Bulging Discs
- Degenerated Discs
- Spinal Stenosis
- Radiculopathy (pinched nerve)
Now we knew exactly what was causing her sciatica and back pain, and we started treating it immediately. On her first visit she stated her pain was a 7 and her ODI was 62, and she had sciatica pain down her leg and into her feet. After 4 weeks, her ODI was down to 40 and she no longer had sciatica pain in her feet. After 8 weeks, her pain was a 4 and the pain in her legs was gone. When she was finished with her treatments, she stated her pain level was a 1, her ODI was a 18 which is considered normal, and her Sciatica was completely gone!
This woman was beginning to think there was nothing she could do to get rid of her Sciatica and back pain, but thanks to our treatments she is once again pain free! If you are suffering with Sciatica and Back Pain, we can help!
