Case Study #135 - 29 Year Old Woman Finds Relief From Her Sciatica and Back Pain With Non-Surgical Treatment

Posted by Illinois Back Institute on Mon, May 18, 2015 @ 05:25 PM

sciatica_135-1This is the Case Study of a 29 year old woman who was recently treated at one of our clinics. She came to see us because she was suffering with severe Sciatica and Back Pain and didn't know where else to turn. She had been to see many doctors but their prescriptions and treatments did nothing to help the pain. She had tried almost everything, even getting numerous injections into her spine to try to deaden the pain. But they were barely effective and soon the pain returned just as bad as before. Her doctors told her surgery was the last option she had, but instead she came to the Illinois Back Institute.

When the patient came to us she had been suffering with her Back Pain and Sciatica for over 2 years. Although that may seem like a short amount of time, as she explained it the pain progressed rapidly, radiating from her back down to her feet, and very quickly became excruciating.

When we first met her she said her pain level was at a 7 (on a scale of 0 to 10) and as she put it, that was a "good day."

She explained that when the pain first started getting extreme she started seeing doctors and receiving prescriptions. In all she ended up seeing 4 different doctors, and they treated her with everything short of surgery on her spine. The treatments she tried included:

  • Traditional physical therapy
  • Chiropractic therapy
  • Pain medications and Narcotics
  • Prescription and over-the-counter drugs
  • NSAIDs (anti-inflammatory drugs)
  • Epidural Shots into her spine

After enduring 3 different injections into her spine with little to no effect, she didn't want to go through with another invasive procedure. And she knew her doctors' next recommendation would be either another injection or surgery. So, she decided to come and see us instead with the hope that we could lessen her pain enough to avoid more shots or surgery.

On the patient's first visit at our clinic, we did some tests to measure her pain levels. As we said earlier, she stated her pain was a 7, but we also wanted to get her Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score. The ODI is used to access a patient's level of disability. Her ODI score was 62, out of a 1 to 100 scale. A score that high is considered a Crippling Disability, where the pain affects all aspects of the patient's life and intervention is required.

We looked over her history and studied her MRI to determine just what was wrong. We knew there was a good chance of there being more than one problem in her back that was causing all of her Back Pain and Sciatica. So what was wrong? There are five main causes of Sciatica, which are:

  • Herniated Disc
  • Bulging Disc
  • Degenerated Disc
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Piriformis Syndrome

Our patient had nearly all of them! She had a herniated disc, bulging disc, degenerated disc, and spinal stenosis, along with spondylolisthesis (a displacement of a vertebrae in the spine), and radiculopathy (compression of a nerve root). With that many problems it is no surprise that her Back Pain and Sciatica became so severe in such a short amount of time. But now that we knew what was wrong, we knew how to help.

As we said earlier, on her first visit with us her pain was a 7 and her ODI was a 62. After just 4 weeks of our treatments, her pain was down to a 4, and her ODI was down to a 38. She continued with the treatments for another couple months, and at the end her pain was down to a 1, her ODI was 18, and her Sciatica pain was completely relieved!

This woman had tried everything that doctors could think of short of surgery to relieve her back pain, to no avail. However, our treatment was able to repair her damaged back and resolve her Sciatica pain without any drugs or invasive procedures! If you are suffering from Sciatica or Back Pain and are looking for a better option than drugs or surgery, we can help!
