This is the Case Study of a 46 year old woman who visitied the Illinois Back Institute to try and get some relief from her Sciatica and back pain. She had been suffering with it for over 10 years and was looking for anything that could relieve her pain for even a little while. She was tired of letting the Sciatica dictate what she could and could not do.

When the patient first came into our clinic, she explained how at first the back pain was tolerable and something she thought she could live with. But the pain started moving down her leg and becoming more intense, and when that happened it started affecting her life. She could no longer move around like she used to, or go for walks, and ended up gaining weight because of it. Even simple things like sitting in a car for a long car ride became unbearable. Because of all of this, she stopped doing a lot of the things she used to enjoy. And she had had enough. She wanted to enjoy life.
As she explained it to us, she just wanted to "feel normal again."
The patient told us that she had been to 4 different doctors for help, and they had prescribed her the typical treatments. These included traditional physical and chiropractic therapies, pain and prescription drugs, and NSAIDs and over-the-counter medications. These treatments either had very little or no effect at all on her back and Sciatica pain. Her doctors wanted to give her injections in her spine next, and if that didn't work, surgery. But after the first treatments were ineffective at best, she was reluctant to let her doctors try more invasive ones. So, she wanted to come and see us before she "took that plunge."
When the patient came in to our clinic, she stated her pain level was at a 8 (out of a 0 to 10 scale), and her Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) was a 50 (on a scale from 1 to 100). The ODI is used to measure the level of disability, and a score of 50 is considered a Severe Disability.
Patients with this level of pain do not get better on their own and require intervention.
Our patient knew she had Sciatica, because the pain traveled all the way down her leg and into her foot, but she didn't know for sure what was causing it. There are five main causes of Sciatica:
- Herniated Disc
- Bulging Disc
- Degenerated Disc
- Spinal Stenosis
- Piriformis Syndrome
She thought she had a herniated disc. And while that is the most common cause of Sciatica, after studying her MRI and X-ray we detemined there was no herniation. However, she did have a bulging disc and a degenerated disc, along with spondylolisthesis (a displaced vertebrae in the lower spine) and radiculopathy (impingement at the nerve root).
Now that we knew what her condition was, we knew exactly how to treat it.
At her first treatment, her pain level was a 8 and ODI was 50. After a month, her pain was down to a 1 on average and her ODI was down to 40. After 2 months her ODI was at 34 and she no longer had pain in her legs. By the end of her treatments, her pain was at a 0, her ODI was at 14 (considered normal), and the back and Sciatica pain was completely resolved!
This patient had been suffering from back pain and Sciatica for over 10 years, preventing her from living her life. We were able to completely relieve her pain, all without drugs or surgery.
