At the Illinois Back Institute, we have treated many people who had suffered with Sciatica and Back Pain for various amounts of time, from a few months to a few years or more. But rarely have we treated someone suffering with extreme pain for as long as the subject in this Case Study. This 61 year old man came to us after living with back pain and sciatica for over 30 years!

He said that his pain began when he was around 30 years old and has only gotten worse over time. The pain now traveled from his back all the way down his legs and into his feet and had recently become unbearable. He didn't want surgery or other invasive procedures, but had tried everything else his doctors could think of. So he decided to come see us at the Illinois Back Institute.
He had been suffering with Back Pain and Sciatica for literally half of his life.
When the patient first came to see us, he stated his pain as being at a 10 on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the worst pain you can imagine. Unsurprisingly, by this point he could hardly function anymore or do even the most simple daily tasks. Clearly, after suffering for over 30 years, the pain had just become insufferable. He could not even remember what it was like to not have any back pain or sciatica, and he was desperate for relief.
Over the years, the patient had been to see three different doctors who prescribed almost everything short of spinal injections or surgery to try and relieve his pain. These included:
- Traditional physical therapy
- Chiropractic Therapy
- Massage Therapy
- Prescription pain medications
- Over-the-counter and NSAID medications
- And others
His doctors were running out of options on what they could do to help, and were suggesting surgery. But he was adamant about not having any invasive procedures. When he heard about us, he thought it was his last chance to help his pain.
On the patient's first visit to our clinic, we measured his pain level on the Oswestry Disability Index. The ODI is a measurement used as an indicator of disability, and our patient scored a 64 on a scale of 1 to 100. A score of 64 is considered a Crippling Disability, where the back pain is affecting every aspect of the patient's life and requires intervention.
We studied the patient's X-ray and medical history to determine just what was causing his back pain and sciatica. There are five main causes of Sciatica:
- Herniated Disc
- Bulging Disc
- Degenerated Disc
- Spinal Stenosis
- Piriformis Syndrome
It was determined he was suffering from several degenerated discs, severe spinal stenosis, and radiculopathy (impingement at the nerve root.) Now that we knew what was wrong, we knew how to treat it. As was stated before, on his first visit his pain was at a 10 and his ODI was a 64, and his sciatica traveled from his back down into his feet. After just 4 weeks of our treatment, his pain was down to a 3 and the sciatica was no longer in his feet. After 8 weeks his ODI was down to a 16. By the end of his treatments, his pain level was a 0, his ODI was down to a 2, and his Sciatica was completely gone!
After living with Back Pain and Sciatica for half of his life, this man is now pain free for the first time that he could remember. And he didn't have to resort to any invasive procedures to achieve it. If you are suffering with Sciatica and Back Pain, no matter how much or for how long, we can help!
