The following is a case study about a 59 year old woman who came to see us for help with her back problems. She not only had been experiencing severe pain in her back, but it was radiating all the way down to her foot as well. And this had been happening off and on for over 30 years. She had seen several doctors and tried everything short of surgery to help end the pain, but after every treatment the pain would always return. She was worried that nothing more could be done to help her, but then she found the Illinois Back Institute.

The patient's back problems first started when she was still in her 20's, and were relatively minor at the time. She hoped the pain would go away on its own, but over the years they continued, and got worse and worse. She had been to see 4 different doctors over the years, and they had prescribed almost every form of treatment available to help with her pain. These included:
- Physical therapy
- Back Massages
- Prescription Medications and pain pills
- Over-the-counter drugs and NSAIDs
- Powerful Narcotics
- Spinal Injections
Even after all of these different courses of treatment, the pain never went away. This is due to the fact that while these treatments may briefly relieve pain, they do not treat the actual cause of the pain. So the pain will usually return, which is what happened. The patient came to see us because she heard about how our treatment actually targets and eliminates the cause of back pain and sciatica, and was hoping we could do the same for her.
When she first came to see us, she said her pain was between an 8 and 9 on a scale of 0 to 10. We also measured her pain level on the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), which is a test that doctors use to measure a patient's level of disability due to their back pain, and she scored a 50 on a scale of 1 to 100. This is considered a Severe Disability, meaning the pain is affecting most areas of her life. Then we studied her MRI and did a full evaluation to determine what exactly was causing her back pain and sciatica. There are 5 most common causes of Sciatica, which are:
- Herniated Discs
- Bulging Discs
- Degenerated Discs
- Spinal Stenosis
- Piriformis Syndrome
Our patient had nearly every one of them! She was suffering from a Herniated Disc, Bulging Disc, Degenerated Disc, and Stenosis, along with a pinched nerve that was causing her Sciatica. Now that we knew what the problem was, we could begin treatment immediately.
As we stated earlier, on her first day of treatment she said her pain was between 8-9, her ODI was 50, and her sciatica went all the way into her foot. After just one month of treatment, her pain was already down to a 5. After 2 months her ODI was all the way down to 38 and her sciatica pain was showing much improvement. By the end of her treatments, her sciatica was gone and she said her pain was at a ZERO!
This woman had been suffering with her back pain and sciatica for half of her life, and she thought she would never be rid of it. But we were able to eliminate her pain completely! If you are suffering with back pain and sciatica, we can help you too!
