Bulging Disc Series - Part 6: The Most Common Natural Treatments For Bulging Discs That Are Done At Home

In Part 5 we discussed the common options that most doctors prescribe to treat Bulging Discs, and what the intended purpose of each is. These generally fall into these categories:

  • Mild, over-the-counter pain pills and anti-inflammatories
  • Prescription drugs and narcotics
  • Physical therapy
  • Chiropractic
  • Spinal injections
  • Surgery (many kinds)


The main purpose of these traditional treatments is to either try to decrease inflammation around the damaged area of the spine in the hopes of reducing pain, or to cover up and bypass the pain. As we have said before, these treatments can work for a little while. But because the cause of the pain is still there, the pain will eventually return.

When some people are suffering from Bulging Discs, the may not think it is serious enough to see a doctor about, or they may just prefer more natural treatment methods. In this part we are going to talk about some of the most common natural treatments that people do to help with Bulging Discs, which can be done at home.

Natural Treatment #1 - Heat and Ice

Maybe the most common way that people treat Bulging Discs at home is with heat packs or ice packs. This is a good way to treat minor injuries, but the problem is that many people do not know when they should use a hot compress or an ice pack. In general, the rule of thumb is that if the pain is persistant, like a constant back soreness, then heat should be used. Ice should be used if the pain is immediate or has suddenly become worse. Often times it also helps to switch between the hot and cold.

Unfortunately it is not very feasible for most people, because they have to work, have families to take care of, or some other reason. Believe it or not, the foods that we eat can have a big effect on the health of your back, and in turn your Bulging Disc. The obvious benefit is that eating better can help people lose weight, which helps lessen the strain on the back and reduces pain. But besides that, eating too much bad food can actually cause pain by increasing inflammation in the body. A more healthy diet can fight this inflammation and lessen pain.

Natural Treatment #4 - Exercise

Exercising has some obvious benefits for helping with Bulging Discs, but many people are reluctant to do it because they think that it will make the injury worse. However, it can actually be helpful! Low impact exercises and light walking can help strengthen the muscles around the spine, which reduces pain by lessening the pressure on the discs. And of course it helps people lose weight. Just be careful not to overdo it!

Natural Treatment #5 - Stretching

Several types of stretching, such as Yoga, can be very helpful in reducing Bulging Disc pain. They can increase movement and flexibility, improve posture, and reduce stress, all of which can help to relieve pain from a Bulging Disc.

Everyone knows massages can be very relaxing, which is very helpful, and massaging the area around a Bulging Disc can help lower stress and lessen pain.


Bulging Discs can be extremely difficult to treat. That is because these treatments, just like the ones from Part 5, do not treat what is causing the Bulging Disc! These solutions are only temporary, meant to mask the pain and cover up the injury. So, the Bulging Disc is still there, and eventually the pain will return.
