Bulging Disc Series - Part 4: What Are Bulging Discs? (with Video)

Posted by Illinois Back Institute on Fri, Sep 04, 2015 @ 05:06 PM

This is Part Four in our series about Bulging Discs! If you missed Part Three, Click Here!

So far in this Bulging Disc Series, we have talked about the basics of Bulging Discs, which included the following:

  • In Part 1 we began our discussion on what a Bulging Disc is, which started with some basic facts about the anatomy of the spine. We then talked about what a disc does and how it can become damaged and begin to bulge out from between the vertebrae in the spine.
  • Part 2 of our series was about what causes Bulging Discs. We talked about how they occur when a part of the disc deteriorates for some reason. There are two main reasons for this: either part of the outside of the disc weakens which leads to it bulging out, or the inside of the disc dehydrates and causes the disc to "deflate" like a flat tire.
  • And in the third part of our series, we talked about the most common symptoms of Bulging Discs. Of course the main symptom is pain usually caused by the bulge of the disc pinching a nerve, but there are other symptoms as well that can vary depending on what part of the spine the Bulging Disc is located. We talked about the three main areas of the spine, which are cervical, thoracic, and lumbar, and discussed the different symptoms related to each area. We also breifly covered some of the risk factors that can increase Bulging Disc pain.

Some of what we have discussed so far may not be exactly clear for some people, or just might be a little confusing. The following video provides a recap of what has been talked about so far, and includes some visual aides and animation which will help everyone to better understand what Bulging Discs are, what causes them, and what they can do:

This video was created to show everyone and help you understand what can happen when a disc becomes damaged or dehydrated. It is of the utmost importance that everyone knows as much as they can about what Bulging Discs are and how they occur. We have always believed, and it has been scientifically proven, that the more that you know about your problem, the more likely you are to eliminate it and get better.

Remember, this is just Part Four in this series. Our next part will continue the discussion on Bulging Discs by discussing some of the common treatments doctors prescribe to treat them. Look for it coming soon!
