This is Part 10 in a series about Bulging Discs. If you missed Part 9, Click Here!
For the people at the Illinois Back Institute, it has always been our experience that the more that you understand about your problem, the more likely you are to eliminate it. This is the reason that we created this series about Bulging Discs. Most people who are suffering with them just know that they are in pain; they do not know what a Bulging Disc is, what caused it, or why the treatments they tried to relieve the pain did not work. People who are suffering with Bulging Discs need to know as much as they can about them, so that they will be in the best position as possible to eliminate them.

The first part of this series was about what a Bulging Disc is. To better explain it, we first went over some basic anatomy of the spine, including that it is made up of 24 vertebrae with a disc in-between each one. The disc's purpose is to act like cushions for the vertebrae and lessen the impact on them from normal daily activites. It is made up of a protective shell on the outside, and a jelly-like substance on the inside. Sometimes the disc can become damaged or deteriorate in some way, causing it to bulge out. Hence why it is called a Bulging Disc!
Part 2 was about what causes a Bulging Disc. There are basically two main reasons they occur:
- The most common cause is due to the jelly inside dehydrating. If you think of the disc like a car tire, the jelly inside the disc would be like air in a tire. And when a tire loses air, it becomes flat and less stable, and begins to bulge out. This is similar to what happens to a disc when the jelly inside dries up.
- The other most common cause is because of the protective outer shell weakening. When part of this shell weakens, pressure on the disc causes the jelly inside to push up against that weakened section, which then causes that area to bulge out.
In Part 3 we discussed the most common symptoms of Bulging Discs. Obviously the most common symptom is pain, usually in the area of the Bulging Disc. But there are other symptoms such as numbness, stiffness, and tingling, and these can differ depending on what area of the spine the Bulging Disc is in. We also discussed what factors can intensify these symptoms, which includes:
- Bending forward
- Coughing or sneezing
- Lifting something heavy, and/or twisting
- Staying bent over for an extended period with your arms out in front of you
- Poor posture
- Sitting awkwardly or leaning forward for an extended period
The 4th part of the series included a video that provided a recap of what we had discussed so far, and also included some animations to help everyone to better understand what we had talked about.
Part 5 was about what the most common treatments that doctors prescribe to try and treat Bulging Discs. The most common treatments include:
- Anti-inflammatory drugs and over-the-counter pain pills
- Physical therapy
- Prescription drugs and narcotics
- Spinal Injections
We also talked about the benefits and side effects for each of these treatments, and explained how most of these treatments are only temporary because they only cover up the pain and do not treat the cause of the pain.
In Part 6 of the series we talked about some of the most common natural treatments for Bulging Discs that people can do at home. These treatments are mostly for minor injuries that are not too painful. These treatments included:
- Using heat and ice packs
- Getting some bed rest
- Eating better
- Getting massages
Part 7 was about our treatment for Bulging Discs, called Functional Disc Rehydration. We explained the science behind it and why it is so different and more effective than any other treatment that we have previously mentioned. Our treatment works because it targets the actual Bulging Disc to heal it and eliminate pain. All of the previous treatments do not try to heal the disc; their main purpose is to relieve the pain by covering up the injury. The problem with this is that while it may work for a while and provide some relief, the Bulging Disc is still there. Which means that in most cases the pain will return, and in many cases worse than before. Our treatment is different because it heals the disc by getting vital nutrients and oxygen to re-enter the disc and rehydrate it, while also strengthening and stabilizing the muscles around the spine.
Also, we discussed the amazing study that we commissioned that showed:
- After just one Functional Disc Rehydration treatment, ALL patients experienced disc rehydration of at least 18 percent
- 10 weeks or more of therapy resulted in disc rehydration of 80 percent
- EVERY patient in the study had their Bulging and Herniated discs completely eliminated
Finally, Parts 8 and 9 were about providing proof of how our treatment works, by giving examples of the many patients we have treated and eliminated their Bulging Discs. Part 8 included several examples of Before and After MRI's from patients we treated, that showed how their Bulging Disc looked before they began treatment and how it looked at the end of treatment. These showed definitively that our treatment was able to completely eliminate their Bulging Discs! And Part 9 included several case studies and testimonials from patients, so that you could hear from regular people in their own words how they were feeling before treatment compared to how they feel afterwards. Many of these people had tried several treatments before coming to us, including several spinal injections and surgery, that did not work and left them in pain. But when they came to us for treatment, we were able to relieve their pain completely!
