Sciatica and Herniated Disc Treatment Case Report #111

Posted by Dr. Jeff Winternheimer D.C. on Mon, Jun 30, 2014 @ 11:50 AM

Michael Smith is a 38 year old Michael entered our clinic in Feb of 2014 and he stated his back and leg pain started in 2009. Before coming into our clinic he had years of treatment at a spinal rehab center which resulted in his pain getting a little better. Eventually in Jan 2014 his pain got worse; it was at that time that he decided to consult with the Illinois Back Institute (IBI).

When he came into see us he has Sciatica pain on the left (pain down his left leg), and left side of his back. His pain was constant. He was able to get momentary relief by sitting but it was only temporary. The pain on a scale of one to ten was a 4 all the time but would go higher several times per week.
His Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) was over 30 on his first visit. He was considered moderately disabled.
The ODI is an indicator of how well the patients can perform activities of daily living. The score is used as a way to me4asure the effect your pain has on your ability to live your life. The higher the score the more your life is disabled by your pain. The patients have a score over 30 and have pain that comes and goes can often end up in surgery if not treated properly.
The ODI is considered the gold standard for measuring the outcome of therapy. The lower your ODI score after therapy the better your outcome. It is used to demonstrate how well you improved. The goal of therapy is to lower the ODI as much as possible. Therapies that lower the ODI the most are considered to have the best outcome.
ODI is scored as follows:
0-20 Minimal disability: This group can cope with most living activities. Usually no treatment is indicated, apart from advice on lifting, sitting posture, physical fitness, and diet.
20-40 Moderate disability: This group experiences more pain and problems with sitting, lifting and standing, travel and social life are more difficult and they may well be off work. The back condition can usually be managed by conservative means.
40-60 Severe Disability: Pain remains the main problem in this group of patients. These patients require detailed investigation.
60-80 Crippled: Back pain impinges on all aspects of these patients' lives. Positive intervention is required.
80-100 These patients are either bed-bound or exaggerating their symptoms.
Due to his condition being recurrent his concerns and ours were that his problems were not being address appropriately.
He has x-rays in 2009 but no MRI. His x-ray revealed a minimal problem but nothing serious because x-rays cannot identify if a disc is herniated only an MRI is able to identify a more severe disc problem.
When he came into the Illinois Back Institute we ordered and MRI. The MRI allows for a better diagnosis for chronic problems within the spine.
His MRI revealed he was suffering 2 Herniated Discs. The Herniated Discs were the cause of his Sciatica and also the reason he never got better with other treatments. Know he had 2 Herniated Discs we formulated a course of care for treating and healing his herniated discs using the patented protocol of IBI.
The Illinois Back Institute Protocol is specifically designed, and scientifically proven to eliminate the problems in the disc including Herniated Discs, without the use of drugs or surgery.
Without having the proper diagnosis he never received the proper treatment. The key to resolution of back problems and sciatica is to make sure your treatment matches your diagnosis and you have the proper diagnosis. Many persistent and chronic back problems are the result of not getting the proper treatments and not getting the proper diagnosis.
After have 12 treatments at the Illinois Back Institute for Herniated Discs and Sciatica, his pain dropped to a 0 and his ODI was down to an 8. His condition responded well and quickly because the proper course of care was administered.
At the end of his car his back pain and Sciatica were gone and his ODI was at a 0. He was functionally stable and able to perform all the duties of his work and life...PAIN FREE. All this was accomplished in a short period of time because his treatment matched his diagnosis.
The most important factor for treating his and your back pain is to make sure you are getting the best therapy for your condition. If you have a condition that is not responding to therapy, you can run the risk of having a more severe problem in the future. These types of problems if not treated properly can lead you down a path to surgery.
It is important to get the proper diagnosis and the proper treatment for your condition.
