Causes of Back Pain in Children and Teens

kids healthBack pain is perhaps the most common medical complaint among adults today.  However, did you know that children and teens often suffer with back pain problems, as well?  The causes are numerous, ranging from obesity to overloaded backpacks.  The treatments are almost as numerous as the causes, with everyone in the medical field having a different opinion regarding how to correct the problem.  What is really the cause, and what is the safest way to address this issue?

Causes of Back Pain in Children and Teens

Many things can cause back pain and stress in adults, including age.  But children and teens are young and should have healthy backs, right?  Not necessarily.  In today’s society it’s not difficult to find reasons that young people suffer from back pain.  Here are just a few examples.

  • Obesity: Being obese or even slightly overweight can have a negative effect on young people.  The stress from carrying around extra weight can be detrimental to a still-developing body.  Studies have shown that musculoskeletal issues, including back pain, are directly related to extra body weight.
  • Heavy School Books and Backpacks: According to recent research, children wearing backpacks that are heavier than 15 percent of their body weight suffer from pain and discomfort.  Improper positioning of the backpack can also lead to back pain problems.  Many children prefer the one-strapped backpacks or wear only one of the two straps provided on their bags.  Carrying the all the weight from the bag on one shoulder can lead to shoulder dislocation.  In addition, wearing too heavy of a bag or wearing it incorrectly causes back issues later in life for these children.
  • Sports: While participating in sports is a great way for children to stay healthy and active, it can also result in lower back injuries.  It’s important to make sure your child pays attention to proper stance and positioning while playing sports.  Also, any injuries should be checked immediately.

Treatment Options for Young People

Your child is precious to you, so you may hesitate to fill him or her with prescription drugs, and you most likely take pause at the mention of surgery.  Fortunately, those are not the only options to treat back pain problems in your child.  You have another choice.  Functional Disc Rehydration is a noninvasive procedure that takes the pressure off your vertebrae through compression and traction, allowing your spine to naturally replenish needed fluids into your vertebral discs.

The Illinois Back Institute uses this method along with physical therapy to strengthen your spine so that back pain problems and discomfort will be eliminated.  Because Function Disc Rehydration is safe for people of all ages, it is the perfect solution for your child’s back problem.  Don’t turn to drugs or surgery; try this natural method first.  You will be pleasantly surprised with the results!
