What Are Different Lower Back Pain Causes?

lower back pain causesLiving with lower back pain can be a nightmare.  You may feel there is nothing you can do about this pain, but take heart, there are solutions.  First, it is important to know the lower back pain causes in order to know how to avoid these situations. 


Specific Lower Back Pain Causes

  • Sports injuries: Playing sports can often cause strains or even tight muscles that result in lower back pain. 
  • Arthritis: Arthritis is another common culprit, as it can cause a breakdown of the cartilage in the spinal column. 
  • Sleeping: Sleeping in a less than ideal position can actually cause lower back pain, too.  Sleeping on your stomach is actually the worse position for your spine.
  • Herniated discs: A herniated disc is caused when a portion of the disc in the spine is forced through a weakened portion of the disc. It can be caused from either injury or the aging process.
  • Spinal stenosis: When the spinal column narrows, or pinches, it causes a great deal of lower back pain. 
  • Sciatica: Sciatica is another common cause of back pain. This condition is caused by a pinching of the sciatic nerve. This can be caused by a pinched nerve, a slipped disc or a herniated or bulging disc.

How to avoid back pain

There are a number of ways to avoid back pain, and they include:

  • Exercise often to maintain a healthy weight, keeping undue stress off the back. Exercise will also keep your muscles supple and flexible, helping to alleviate, and avoid, back pain. 
  • Be safe when you play sports or exercise. Bend your knees, and lift with your legs, not your back.  Wear proper safety equipment and always stretch after working out.
  • Do yoga.  Yoga is a great way to help your body avoid back pain.  If you are new to the practice, seek out a professional to help you get started.
  • Sleep properly.  Avoid sleeping on your stomach.  If you are a side or back sleeper, placing a pillow either under or between your knees can help alleviate back pain. Make sure your mattress is not too old. An old mattress will stop giving you the proper support, and this can result in back pain.
