Back pain is a common complaint among adults. Although it can affect the entire lower back region, it’s also possible to only feel pain on one side. You might have heard that pain on the right side of the lower back indicates a kidney problem, but in most cases, this isn’t the cause. There are several other reasons for experiencing lower right back pain that range from sleep positions to damaged discs.
1. Poor Posture
The way you stand and sit can have a big impact on how your lower back feels. If you tend to slouch to the right, this puts added pressure on the muscles on that side. This extra pressure can result in soreness and tension. Improving your posture should help ease back pain in this case.
2. Sleeping Position
Sleeping in certain positions can also put more pressure on the lower right side of your back. It might not make it uncomfortable for you to sleep this way, but you could wake up feeling stiff and sore. If the pain occurs in the same area every morning, try adjusting your sleep positions.
If you tend to use the muscles on the right side of your body more, this can lead to localized pain in your lower right back. For example, carrying a heavy purse or having a full backpack hanging on your right shoulder can put additional strain on your muscles. Try to distribute any weight you're carrying evenly to reduce back pain.
Sciatica is a medical problem that can cause pain in the lower right region of your back. It occurs when added pressure is placed on your sciatic nerve, which starts in your lower back and reaches all the way down your leg. It leads to pain and soreness that can extend from your back to your buttocks and down to the lower part of your leg. Mild cases can usually be treated with stretches, hot or cold packs and over-the-counter pain medication, but persistent or severe cases might require another type of treatment.
5. Herniated Disc
A herniated disc occurs when the tissue between the bones in your spinal column becomes compressed and moves out of place or ruptures. This can cause pain on either side of the body, including the lower right back region. Conventional treatments involve pain medication, exercises and hot or cold packs, but there are also other treatment methods, such as Functional Disc Rehydration, which restores hydration to the affected disc or discs.
6. Strains and Tears
Vigorous athletic activity, improper lifting and falling can all lead to muscle tears and strains that affect the lower right back. This type of injury, which is a common cause of back pain, occurs when the muscles in the back are stretched too far and develop tears. Avoiding further strain, taking pain medication and applying hot packs can help heal strains and tears.
7. Kidney Problems
One of the more serious causes of lower right back pain is a kidney problem, such as an infection or kidney stones. If you have a kidney infection, you’ll also experience other signs of this condition, such as a fever. Although the kidneys usually aren’t responsible for lower right back pain, it’s important to call your doctor if you do have any other symptoms, so you can have your kidneys checked.
