Dr. Jeff joins Jeanne Sparrow and Melissa Forman on WCIU’s You & Me This Morning for a special Halloween addition on how to avoid back pain. With Halloween almost here many of us will be heading out to the pumpkin patches. Lifting a heavy object like a pumpkin can do damage to ones back. In this clip Dr. Jeff explains what one can do to lift correctly so you can avoid back pain while searching for pumpkins.
What is the right way to lift an object?
1. Lift close to your body.
2. Feet shoulder width apart.
3. Bend your knees and keep your back straight.
4. Tighten your stomach muscles.
5. Lift with your legs.
6. If you're straining, get help.
Wrong Way: The goal is not to flex forward using your spine when lifting.
Remember knowing the correct way to lift can make a huge difference and truly help your back. Even if the item isn’t heavy it is still important to lift the right way. Even something as light as a peace of paper can still do damage to your back due to the twisting and bending.
Always use your knees and legs to lift because this will avoid loading the disc.
The goal is to flex and bend at the hips.
Happy Halloween Everyone!!!
