Herniated Disc l5 s1 Treatment – Erin Blievernicht

Posted by Dr. Jeff Winternheimer D.C. on Mon, Sep 30, 2013 @ 01:02 PM

Erin Blievernicht was working as a teacher and also a server on the side. One day she woke up with soreness in her right lower hip. The pain was so extreme is caused her to stop working out. Erin believes her pain started from constantly being on her feet at both of her jobs, bending over to talk to her students & by carrying her serving tray on one side of her body. Erin went back and forth with a few different doctors. Her orthopedic doctor sent her for an MRI, which showed that she was suffering from a herniated disc in the l5-s1 area. After seeing her MRI her doctor suggested traction therapy. Erin then went to a chiropractor for 2 months. “The chiropractor tried the traction therapy but it wasn’t really successful as much as this because this was more of also strengthening your core and stretching out the muscles,” said Erin.

After traction therapy failed Erin’s doctor suggested cortisone shots or surgery. “I don’t want to do the cortisone shots because it’s just masking the pain,” said Erin. When Erin heard about the Illinois Back Institute she decided to give it a try. When she first came in her pain level was at an 8 out of 10 on bad days or at a constant 4 daily. Erin described her pain to be so intense there were days that she couldn’t even walk, stand up to shower, or do any simple chores like laundry and the dishes. She was taking up to 4 Advil and 4 Tylenol just to get through a day of work. Erin’s goal when she started treatment at the Illinois Back Institute was to be able to get up in the middle of the night to use the washroom, be able to shower and not have to miss a full day of work.

Erin is now at the end of her treatment at Illinois Back Institute and has ZERO pain. She has completely stopped taking painkillers and just got cleared to go to the gym. Before she had to stop looking for a house due to the pain and not being able to work as enough. She is now able to go back to work and save up money to finally purchase her own home. “What was really beneficial about this versus other therapy that I had is that there are chiropractors, there are regular doctors, the physical therapy is here then the people that help you with all the stuff and help you with things. And then you get to joke around with the people around you,” said Erin.

“I’m so glad I came because like I said you’re here for 2 hours typically but your getting everything done in 1 day. You’re going to the chiropractor, you’re going to physical therapy, you’re strengthening your core, you’re working out a little bit, you’re sweating, you’re doing your thing but it’s all done in 1 session,” said Erin.
