Some of the variables that you do during the day are going to add more pressure to your discs. Hip Hinge is the right way to bend, that will avoid loading pressure on the discs. Too much pressure on the disc can cause Disc Degeneration.
The Wrong Way: When people bend, they lean forward which causes the back to roll forward therefore causing the flexion to load the discs.
The Right Way: Hip Hinges
- Get a four foot dolly (you can purchase this from any local hardware store)
- Place the dolly behind you and line it up to your spine
- Bend your body at your hips and the stabilized dolly will teach you how to properly bend to avoid flexion.
- Practice leaning forward with the dolly behind you and bending down as if you are picking up something.
The idea is to avoid flexion because that is what loads the discs.
