Stretching Exercises Sciatica

Berwyn Physical Therapist Assistant, Taryn, in this clip is showing a stretch that is very helpful for those who are suffering from sciatica. Amanda McKenzie is the patient in the clip suffering from sciatica. Click here to hear her story. The term sciatica comes from the sciatic nerve. When the sciatic nerve is pinched you have sciatica. The sciatic nerve is the nerve that supplies the lower extremities (legs). It is the largest nerve in the body; it’s about the thickness of your thumb. Because of its size when it’s pinched it can cause “severe pain!”

Sciatica Leg Stretch:

While lying on your back use a Thera-band to lift one leg up in the air towards your chest.

    • Hold for 20 seconds
    • Repeat 3 times
    • Make sure to do this slowly and rest in between so that the muscle gets a break.
    • When finished with one leg, move to the next and do the exact same stretch.

Your back pain can cause radiating pain to go all the way down your leg and to your feet. It’s important to focus on stretching daily. Especially after our treatment it is important to stretch. When doing this stretch you want a good pull behind the leg but if it begins to hurt then bring your leg down a little. 

Before doing any type of exercises makes sure to check with your doctor and get his or her approval. You don’t want to do a stretch that in the long run can worsen your pain! It is important to be diagnosed by a professional before doing anything.
