In last week's Back Pain Relief Tip, we established that people spend too much time sitting. (If you missed last week's tip, click here!) The world that we live in has become one where, for most people, sitting is a necessity. And all of that sitting is one of the main reasons that the number of cases of people suffering with back pain, neck pain, or sciatica has increased dramatically in a short amount of time.
In the previous tip, we recommended standing up and moving around for a couple minutes if you have been sitting for too long. But for some people, that may not be possible. For instance, their job may prevent them from being able to leave their desk. So, we recommend taking what we call a micro break every hour or so. This can be done while sitting in any chair, and is very simple:
- Step 1: Scoot to the front edge of the chair
- Step 2: Sit up straight, with your feet firmly on the floor and pointing forward, and knees about shoulder width apart
- Step 3: Stretch out your arms at your sides with palms facing outward
- Step 4: Hold your shoulders back
- Step 5: Rotate your palms in small circles, which will roll your shoulders back

At The Illinois Back Institute we are dedicated to educating people, because we know that the more that you understand about your problem, the more likely you are to eliminate it. We specialize in Functional Disc Rehydration - a multi-disciplinary approach to making the back healthier without surgery, injectionsormedications. This works toward relieving the pressure off the disc by allowing the nutrients to flow back into it. In the meantime, the supportingmuscles are strengthened and reactivated to help re-stabilize the spine.
