Knowing the correct way to lift can help your back in several ways; most importantly it can prevent back pain. The biggest mistake that people make is that they lift objects using only their back. This puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the back and can lead to muscle strains and disc problems such as a bulging or herniated disc. The goal is to not flex forward with your spine while lifting.
You want to keep your back as straight as possible when lifting. To accomplish this, remember these simple tips:
- When bending down to pick something up, flex and bend at the hips and knees, not the spine
- When lifting an object, always use your knees and legs.
This video will help to explain this even better:
By remembering these two tips, you will prevent overloading the discs in your back and avoid any back pain!
