As we said in last week's tip, much of the back pain that people suffer with is caused by them not lifting objects in the correct way. The tip from last week was about one of the main ways this happens, which is that people do not wait after being in a relaxed position before lifting anything. Another of the most common ways that people hurt their back while lifting is that they are not doing it correctly, and that is why this week's Back Pain Relief Tip is about Lifting the Right Way!

Knowing the correct way to lift can help your back in several ways; most importantly it can prevent back pain. The biggest mistake that people make is that they lift objects using only their back. This puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the back and can lead to muscle strains and disc problems such as a bulging or herniated disc. The goal is to not flex forward with your spine while lifting.
You want to keep your back as straight as possible when lifting. To accomplish this, remember these simple tips:
- When bending down to pick something up, flex and bend at the hips and knees, not the spine
- When lifting an object, always use your knees and legs.
By remembering these two tips, you will prevent overloading the discs in your back and avoid any back pain!

At The Illinois Back Institute we are dedicated to educating people, because we know that the more that you understand about your problem, the more likely you are to eliminate it. We specialize in Functional Disc Rehydration - a multi-disciplinary approach to making the back healthier without surgery, injectionsormedications. This works toward relieving the pressure off the disc by allowing the nutrients to flow back into it. In the meantime, the supportingmuscles are strengthened and reactivated to help re-stabilize the spine.
