This tip is about another common way of causing back pain while lifting, and that is because people are not doing it correctly!

It's always best to lift correctly, and knowing how can help prevent back pain. Maybe the biggest mistake people make when lifting is that they try to do it using just their back. Lifting in this way puts an extraordinary amount of pressure on the back and can lead to pulled muscles, or something even more serious like a herniated or bulging disc. The way to prevent this from happening is to remember to not flex forward with your spine when you lift. Your back should be as straight as possible the whole time.
The best way to accomplish this is to remember these two simple points:
- When lifting something, always use your legs and knees!
- When bending down to pick up and object, bend and flex at the hips and knees and NOT the spine. Use the Hip Hinge method!
