Not long ago we treated a woman for her back pain and sciatica, which she had been suffering with for over eleven years. The pain started when she was only 20 years old, and had been constant and severely painful ever since. After trying several of the treatments that her doctors recommended and still not finding relief, she was recommended for surgery. But she wanted to avoid that at all costs. So when she heard about the Illinois Back Institute, she scheduled her Free Consultation immediately.
Before coming to us our patient had seen 4 different doctors about her back pain and sciatica. She found out that the main reason for her pain was due to a herniated disc in her lower back, which was also impacting on her sciatic nerve causing the pain to travel all the way down her leg and even into her foot. The doctors she had previously seen had prescribed several different treatments for her, including:
- Massage therapy
- Traditional physical therapy
- Anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs)
These treatments only helped a little bit, and soon the pain came back and continued to get worse. By the time she came to us she said her pain was nearly constantly around a 7 out of 10, and when we measured her on the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) she scored a 60 out of 100 which is considered Severely Disabled. People with ODI scores that high have pain levels that significantly impact on all their daily activities.
We wanted to know exaclty what we were dealing with so we sent her for our own MRI. We found at that not only did she have the large herniated disc that she knew about, but she also had several degenerated dics that were also causing problems. Fortunately, our treatment specifically targets these causes of back pain and sciatica, so we knew we could help her.
We started the patient's treatment immediately and soon she began to feel better. After just one month her ODI score was already down to a 22, and when she was ready to be discharged her sciatica was gone completely, her pain level was down from 7 to just a 1, and her ODI score was just 14 which is the normal range!
At 31 this woman had been dealing with severe back pain and sciatica for over a third of her life, and was facing the possibility of back surgery. Instead she came to see us, and she is now back pain free again!
At the Illinois Back Institute we strive to educate everyone as much as possible about their back pain and sciatica, because it is proven that the more people know about their problem the more likely they are to eliminate it!
