Most people stand at their sinks several times a day for some reason, whether it be to brush or floss your teeth, wash dishes, prepare meals, or maybe something else. Because this is such a common practice, it should not come as a surprise that it is a major cause of back pain! Two of the complaints we hear the most from people suffering with back pain are: "Whenever I brush my teeth, my back always starts hurting!" and "Just washing dishes for 10 minutes makes my back pain feel excruciating!" This is because when many people do these simple everyday tasks, they are doing them wrong!

When people are standing at a sink, to brush their teeth or wash dishes for example, they often lean forward while also reaching out in front of themselves. By repeatedly performing these motions, people put a tremendous amount of extra load on the discs in the spine, which often turns in to back problems. The problem is not with the activities themselves, but the way that people stand and move while doing them. This is why the correct way to stand at the sink is our Back Pain Relief Tip of the week!

- The number one thing to remember when you are standing at the sink to do anything is to stand up straight and stay that way as much as possible. The best way to do this is to place a small 6-inch step stool in front of you and keep one of your feet on it. Doing this will help you to stay in an upright position while standing at the sink.

- Of course, you can't stand up straight the whole time. So the other important thing to remember is that when you do bend over, you bend at the hips using the hip hinge method so that you keep your spine straight as you bend over. Also, stand up straight again as soon as you can.
