Back Pain Relief Tip: Two Ways To Exercise That Help With Back Pain


This week's Back Pain Relief Tip is about Exercise, which can be good for your back. Some people may think that is crazy, especially those suffering with back pain, but it's true! Most people assume that exercising with back pain would only make the injury worse, but this is not usually the case. In fact, it helps strengthen your back which can relieve pain!

Obviously, there are some limitations as to how much exercise each individual person can do. If someone's back pain is severe, they may not be able to exercise as much as someone whose injury is relatively minor. The amount of exercise a person is capable of depends on the cause and severity of their back pain. The goal should be to exercise as much as you are safely able to without making the problem worse. Just BE CAREFUL and DON'T OVERDO IT!

We are going to focus on two forms of low impact exercise that are good for your back: swimming and light walking.

Swimming -  The pool is a great place to relieve stress on your back while also strengthening the muscles in the spine, because swimming is not a weight bearing activity. By eliminating the pressure on your back you lessen your pain, which should make it easier to move around and make you better able to exercise in the pool. Try to go swimming at least once a week if possible.

Walking - Your goal should be to take a brisk 20 minute walk each day. If you can't walk for that long, walk as much as you can at first until your back gets used to the activity. Then slowly increase the amount of time you walk for. If you can't walk the whole 20 minutes all at once, break it up. Walk for 10 minutes in the morning and 10 more in the evening.


By doing these simple, low-impact exercises, you can help strengthen the muscles around the area of your back injury, reducing stress on the discs in the spine and alleviating pain!
