1. Most of the people diagnosed with Herniated Discs are between the ages of 30 and 50.
2. The pain caused by a herniated disc can be felt almost anywhere in the body, depending on which nerves are being pinched and where it is happening.
3. The majority of herniated discs do not cause any pain because the herniation is not pinching any nerves.
4. The most common disc in the spine to become herniated is located between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae in the lower back.
5. There are 3 main ways that a herniated disc occurs:
- From an injury
- The disc degenerating over time, or
- Due to a congenital, developmental, or genetic issue
6. Herniated discs caused by injury are more likely to hurt right away, but the symptoms will often lessen in around 6 to 8 weeks.
7. Over half of the middle aged people who have never had back pain in their lives will still most likely have at least one herniated disc without knowing about it because it has never hurt them.
8. Surgery for herniated discs can be very risky. Aside from the regular possible complications for any surgery (such as infection), it is common for the surgery to not work and make things even worse (failed back surgery syndrome).
9. Herniated Discs are often difficult to diagnose, and it cannot be done with an X-Ray. A MRI is needed to properly diagnose one.
10. Herniated discs occur most often in the lower back, and are one of the main causes of sciatica.
