This week's Sciatica Stretch is called the Piriformis Stretch! The piriformis is located in the buttocks region, and runs close to the sciatic nerve. When the piriformis muscle becomes tight and/or inflamed it can irritate the sciatic nerve. This can lead to a tingling and numbness that runs from the lower back all the way down the leg and even into your foot. It is very important to stretch the piriformis muscle if you are suffering from sciatica.
This Back Pain Relief Tip is about Exercise, which can be good for your back. Some people may think that is crazy, especially those suffering with back pain, but it's true! Most people assume that exercising with back pain would only make the injury worse, but this is not usually the case. In fact, it helps strengthen your back which can relieve pain!
Maureen suffered from a Herniated Disc and Sciatica that were so bad that she lost feeling in her feet during a soccer game. None of the treatments she tried to relieve her pain were working and it would not go away. The pain got so bad that it affected her everyday life and her school life, and she had to quit playing soccer, which is something that she loves. Then she came to the Illinois Back Institute.
As anyone who suffers with Back Pain and Sciatica knows, it can happen suddenly when you have been sitting or standing in the same position for a long period of time, doing work involving a repetitive motion, or lifting. You may even wake up with back or sciatica pain in the morning, and need a way to get some quick relief to get started with your busy day. When this pain strikes, stretching your spine and back muscles can help relieve it. Doing these 4 simple stretching exercises is a great idea when persistant back pain is getting you down.
At the Illinois Back Institute, we want to educate as many people as possible about their back pain and sciatica, because it has been proven that the more that you understand your problem, the more likely you are to eliminate it.
