A 71 year old male came into our clinic presenting with severe back and leg pain. He stated that he has had the pain for the past 15 years, and although he has undergone a number treatments for it, the pain has always remained. Even after numerous spinal injections, the pain was still there. He was tired of all the doctors and all of the traditonal therapies they prescribed that never helped, and most of all he was tired of the pain. He was desperate to find a treatment that worked. So he came to the Illinois Back Institute.

When he first hurt his back 15 years ago, the patient didn't think much of it. He figured it was just a consequence of getting older, and he would go to his family doctor and get a prescription and that would fix the problem. But it didn't fix the problem, and over time it kept getting worse. It eventually started moving down his leg until it eventually reached his big toe. He kept going back to his doctor, and then another, and another, and they all prescribed different treatments and therapies. But they never really worked, and the pain kept increasing. In total he would end up seeing 4 different doctors, who prescribed the following treatments:
- Traditional Physical Therapy
- Spinal Injections
- Pain medications and NSAIDs
- Prescription and Over-the-counter medications
When he came to see us, he stated his pain was at a 7 (out of a 0 to 10 scale), and his Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) was at 30 on a 1 to 100 scale. The ODI is used as an indicator of disability, and a score of 30 is considered Moderately Disabled, meaning the patient would have a very hard time doing simple tasks like sitting, lifting, standing, or even working.
We knew he had Sciatica, but we didn't know what was causing it. So we studied his history and MRI and came up with a diagnosis and plan of action. There are five causes of Sciatica:
- Herniated Disc
- Bulging Disc
- Degenerated Disc
- Spinal Stenosis
- Piriformis Syndrome
He had 4 of them: herniated disc, bulging disc, degenerated disc, and stenosis, along with posterior spondylolisthesis and radiculopathy. It was no wonder his pain was so bad for so long. However, after 4 weeks of our treatments his pain was already down to a 2, his ODI was at 24, and he no longer had pain in his leg. By the end of our treatments, his pain was at a 0, and his ODI was a 20 which is considered a Minimal Disability and healthy.
After suffering with Back Pain and Sciatica for over 15 years, and trying several things to relieve his pain including 6 epidural injections into his spine, this patient was able to finally find relief with our treatment. Now his back pain is resolved and he has felt better than he has in years. If you have been suffering with Back Pain and Sciatica for any amount of time, we can help!
