Case Study #129 - Woman Suffering With Back Pain and Sciatica For Over 11 Years Is Now PAIN FREE Because Of Our Treatment

Posted by Illinois Back Institute on Mon, Aug 10, 2015 @ 05:07 PM

case_study_129The following case study involves a 31 year old woman who came into our clinic for help. She was in an extreme amount of pain, and had been for over 11 years! She was looking for any way she could to find some relief that didn't involve undergoing surgery. She had already tried everything else that her doctors could think of to relieve the pain, but it was always still there. She didn't think there was anything else that could be done, but then she found out about the Illinois Back Institute.

Our patient said that her pain started suddenly when she was just 20 years old, and ever since then it was always there. She knew that the main cause of her pain was caused by a herniated disc in her lower back, and it had gotten so bad now that she was also feeling pain radiating down her leg all the way down to her foot (sciatica). This pain was getting so bad that it was really starting to effect her life and preventing her from doing normal everyday things like she has always done. She said that some days were worse than others, and the day she came to see us was about average for her. She said her pain that day was a 7 on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the worst pain imaginable.

At our first meeting with the patient, we discussed her back problems and some of the methods she had tried before to relieve her back pain and sciatica. We learned that she had been to see 4 different doctors about her back, and they had prescribed several different treatments, including:

  • Traditional physical therapy
  • Chiropractic treatment
  • Massage therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs

These treatments would sometimes work for a little while, but there was always some pain, and it would eventually become worse. We wanted to know exactly what her pain level was, so we tested her on the Oswestry Disability Index. The ODI is a measurement used by doctors to determine a patient's level of disability, and she scored a 60. A person with a score that high is considered Severely Disabled, where the pain impacts most if not all aspects of that person's life. We then checked her MRI to determine exactly what was causing all of her pain. She knew she had a herniated disc, which was very large, but we also found she had degenerated discs as well, and a pinched nerve!

Our patient began treatment immediately. On her first day of treatment her pain was at a 7, her ODI was 60, and she had pain from her back down to her foot. After just one month of treatment, her ODI was down to 22. After two months she no longer had pain down her legs. And by the time she was finished with our treatment, her pain level was down to a 1, her sciatica was completely gone, and her ODI was down to a 14 which is considered normal!

This woman had been suffering with back pain and sciatica for over a third of her life. She was beginning to think she would have to live with the pain forever. But thanks to our treatment, her pain is gone and she can live her life again. If you suffer from back pain and sciatica, we can help you too!

The Illinois Back Institute is dedicated to educating people, because we know that the more that you understand about your problem, the more likely you are to eliminate it.
