Case Study #121 - After Suffering Back Trauma, 31 Year Old Man Has Back Pain and Sciatica Completely Relieved With Our Treatment

back_pain_seminarRecently, we treated a 31 year old male who came into our clinic with back pain and sciatica. He had been experiencing back problems for the past two years, ever since he suffered a severe back trauma. He saw several different doctors and tried everything he could think of to help relieve his back pain and sciatica. His pain was so bad that the doctors were recommending surgery. But, instead of doing something that drastic, he first decided to come to Illinois Back Institute.

When the patient first got to our clinic, he presented with severe back pain that was affecting his ability to work and perform regular daily activities, and sciatica pain that went all the way down to his foot. He explained how two years prior he had suffered a trauma which is when his pain started, and it had only gotten worse since then. He had been to see 3 different doctors, and had been trying several things to relieve the pain, including:

  • Message therapy
  • Spinal injections
  • Pain medications, including narcotics for pain
  • Over-the-counter and prescription medications
  • NSAID's (anti-inflammatory drugs)

After having four injections into his spine and still not experiencing any relief, he was desperate. But surgery was a last resort. When he heard about Illinois Back Institute, he came to us hoping for a miracle to avoid surgery and reclaim his life. We spoke to him and reviewed his MRI and X-Ray scans in order to properly diagnose his back pain and sciatica. There are five main causes of sciatica, and he had four of them:

  1. Herniated Disc
  2. Bulging Disc
  3. Degenerated Disc
  4. Spinal Stenosis

After reviewing the patient's diagnosis, it was determined he suffered from ALL of the above conditions, along with radiculopathy. On his first day of treatment, he reported his pain at a 7 (with 10 being the most severe), and his Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score was a 54 (out of a possible 100). The ODI is a scale used as an indicator of disability, and a score of 54 is considered severely disabled. People with scores that high are always candidates for surgery.

At the start of treatment he had pain starting at his lower back, and traveling through his hips down his legs all the way to his big toe. After 4 weeks of treatment, his ODI was down to 30 (considered moderately disabled) and the sciatica pain no longer went down to his foot. After 8 weeks, the sciatica pain in his leg was completely gone and his ODI was 12. And at the end of his treatments, his ODI was a zero, and his pain was completely gone!

This patient had tried everything short of surgery to help his back pain. Even after suffering trauma to his back and experiencing several different causes of sciatic pain, our treatment was able to completely resolve his back problems and sciatica without drugs or surgery! He was able to get his life back! If you are suffering from any kind of back pain or sciatica, even if it was caused by injury or trauma, we can help you!
