Back Pain Relief Tip #2: Learn How To Bend Correctly!

Posted by Illinois Back Institute on Mon, Jun 27, 2016 @ 04:55 PM

Red_Spine_Guy.jpgThe problem of back pain is a common one, and there are any number of ways that someone can have it. People can hurt their backs from something as complicated as suffering some sort of trauma, to something as simple as sneezing too hard. But one of the most well known ways that people hurt their backs is by having poor posture. Your posture has a great effect on the health of your back, and if your posture is bad you have a much greater chance of suffering from back pain because of it.

The most common way that your posture can impact your back health is in the way you bend, especially at the waist. Bending increases the pressure on the discs in the spine, and bending incorrectly can put too much pressure on those discs, damaging them and causing back pain. In order to prevent putting unneeded pressure on your back, remember that when you are bending you need to keep your spine as straight as possible. The best way to remember to do this is by using the Hip Hinge method!

The Hip Hinge exercise will teach you to keep your back straight while bending. To perform the exercise you will need a broom or something similar:

-  First, take the broom or similar object and hold it up straight against your spine. You want your back to be touching the broom as much as possible, so that your spine will be as straight as possible

- Second, slowly bend down while holding the broom against your back, so that you keep your spine against the broom as much as possible. The broom is a guide to show you the proper way to bend.

- Keep repeating the exercise until your body has taught itself how to bend while keeping your back straight. It may be helpful to do this exercise in front of a mirror so that you can watch yourself do it, and make sure you are doing it correctly.

If you are a little confused about how to perform this tip, the video below will show you how:

Once you learn to bend using the hip hinge method, you will prevent arching in your back and eliminate pressure that causes back pain!
