5 Years Of Sciatica - A Treatment Case Study

Posted by Illinois Back Institute on Mon, Oct 09, 2017 @ 01:39 PM

Sciatica-1.gifOne of our first case studies is about a 41 year old woman who came to us experiencing severe back pain and sciatica. She had been suffering with this pain for over five and a half years and over this time it had been getting increasingly worse. By the time she began treatment the pain in her back and leg was a 9 on a scale of zero to ten.

What she had been feeling was a classic case of sciatica. The pain started in her back before radiating from there down her entire leg and all the way into her foot.

Before she came into our clinic she had already had x-rays taken, and we also ordered a MRI which revealed that our patient had the following conditions:

  • Herniated Disc
  • Bulging Disc
  • Degenerated Disc
  • Stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Pinched Nerve

There are 5 main causes of sciatica and she had them all! She was definitely in bad shape and would only be getting worse without help.

Since the pain started almost 6 years earlier, she had tried nearly every traditional treatment available short of surgery, but the relief these treatments provided was only temporary or minimal at best. Eventually the pain returned and continued to worsen. The treatments she tried included:

  • Traditional physical therapy
  • Narcotics
  • Chiropractic
  • NSAID's, Pain Medication, and Muscle Relaxers
  • 3 Epidural Injections

sciatic nerve painA few months before she came to us for help she had the 3 epidural shots in her spine, hoping they would eliminate her pain. They were effective for a few weeks but eventually the pain came back again. By this time she had been to 4 different doctors regarding her back pain and sciatica, including a surgeon. Since she had been in pain for over 5 years and had tried several different therapies without success she was a prime candidate for surgery. But she didn't want that.

When she first entered our clinic she was showing signs of weakness and diminished reflexes in her leg due to her pinched nerve, her core muscles were weak, and she had endurance problems that were preventing her from being able to perform even simple tasks. Her pain level was a 9 and on the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) she scored a 42, indicating that her back pain and sciatica were severely disabling for her. Her goal was to avoid surgery and we were her last hope for that.

She began treatment; after just 12 sessions her pain went from a 9 down to a 2, her ODI dropped to 22, she no longer felt any pain or numbness in her foot, and her reflexes had returned to normal! At 30 treatments her sciatica was gone, her core was stronger, her back pain and sciatica was a zero and her ODI was a 16 which is considered safe!

Before coming to IBI it was nearly inevitable that this woman was headed for surgery. Anyone who has back pain for a year or more, has received therapy, and whose ODI score is still over 40 is a candidate for surgery, and she met all these criteria. But we were able to relieve her pain and save her from surgery! We have done this for thousands of people and we can for you too!
